Hello,
Yes, I have a copy of my Great Grandfathers Marriage Certificate. He "William" Clark married a Laura Baker (she was born Hertingfordbury1859) in Ware Parish Church, Hertfordshire 2 Jan 1881 before they set of for India a few months later with the Army.
From that document, I had his fathers name "William H. clark" and his Trade "Gardner" but now have his mother and borthers names "Maria" and "Henry" from his Army record.
I couldnt find them anywhere when I looked but really want to see if we do in fact originate from Suffolk or can go back further.

Looks like your man and Laura left the country before the 1881 census - were they back in 1891 or 1901 or 1911 ? (Kent you mentioned)
I couldnt see the 1881 marriage you detail in the GRO Indexes?
Anyways .....................
This is interesting - some matches show up, and the fact they are in Ware ...

1871 - RG10/1776; Folio: 117; Page: 18 - Beccles Newgate Street
William Clarke 36 Head Maltsters Labourer Willingham Maria Clarke 34 Wife Cove Heath? Maria Clarke 9 dau Beccles William Clarke 7 son Mutford? Mary E Clarke 5 dau do
Harriet Henry Clarke 3 son Beccles Frederick Clarke 10 months son do
some inconsistencies there ! compared with 1881 .... until I realised that Harriet was shown as a son, and some attempt at overwriting the name !

I think that Maria originates from Covehithe, a coastal village which is fast disappearing due to erosion of the coastline in north-east Suffolk.
Willingham is a parish just inland from Covehithe.

Hello again,
Thank you for these great matches and your kind assistance.
Going back to the Post 3. I've just noticed I typed 1881 for the date of marrige in Ware for William Clark and Laura Baker. Apologies, that should have been 2nd Jan 1884.
As to when they came home from India. Laura and the Children which was Florence, James, Percy, Victor (My Grandfather), Gladys are registered in the 1901 census as living in Leighton Road , Dover, Kent but William was in South Africa fighting in the Boer War until 1902.
Looking at the replies, I've got a really good feeling that the William Henry Clark from Willingham and Maria from Covehithe could indeed be my Great, Great, Grandparents.... This is really exciting. :-)

I also tried to look for the baptisms of their children but could only find the following:
Maria 13th December 1861 at Beccles (father = maltster) Charles born 24th May baptised 5th June 1870 at Beccles (father = labourer)
I looked at Mutford parish registers also, but unfortunately couldn't find any of the other baptisms.
Regards Anne

Wow thanks Anne, thanks everyone... So it looks like I have the following:-
William Clark (born Beccles, Suffolk 1860) + Laura Baker (Hertingfordbury, Herts 1860) then...
"Father" William Henry Clarke (born Wallingham, Suffolk 1835) + "Mother" Maria Burgess (Born Covehithe, Suffolk 1837) and possibly the rest of Williams' family from the census's Then...
Possibly their fathers/my Great, Great, Great Grandfathers Henry Clarke and Charles Burgess.
This is wonderful... I'm wondering if there any likelihood I can go back further or do you think that the evidence is saying my "Clark(e)" roots are definately in Suffolk and East Anglia? I suppose its looking that way.
