I live in New Jersey. I moved from Washington state. MY mother is the daughter of Helen Fleming. Helen was the grand daughter of James Fleming and Grace Robertson, who were born in Perthshire Scotland and immigrated over to settle in Ontario Canada. Springfield to be exact. James was the grand son of John Fleming b. about 1769 Cragganfearn Perthshire Scotland. Laird Cragganfearn Fleming being his father. I have suspected Cragganfearn's Christian name, his siblings and his parents, but I cannot quite make it fit. Parish records are giving me a different DOB, area and the land Cragganfearn (according to Jane at Blair Castle) was leased by an Alex Douglas and James Robertson. Names farmiliar huh? Families usually intermarried between each other and these names intertwine with the Flemings. I beleive that the reason why it is believed that, that land was in the family for three generations is because Laird Cragganfearn Fleming married into either the Robertson or Douglas line, therefore taking on the land and then later passing the torch(in a way) back to Laird Douglas (possibly a brother in law). Note that: Laird Douglas' two daughters married Fleming cousin's. Which leads me to belive that John had a brother or Laird Cragganfearn had a brother. I have been doing extensive research and have alot of information, but could use more. I would like to trade all my information on my line, for information of your line. I think we will end up finding that we are in some way distant cousins. I have FamilyTree maker and can email you what I have. Write back. Tahni

The romantic story is about his son John who fell in love with his father's servant girl, Janet Ross. The laird would have none of this and sent Janet back to her home in Ross-shire. But John followed her and they married in 1790. Because of his "wilfullness" John was disinherited.
The couple lived at Mains of Kilmorich in Dowally where they farmed. Five children, four of whom became pioneers in Grey and Bruce counties of Ontario. Catherine (m. Gilbert Saunders), John (m. Ann Smith, after her death m. Charlotte Wallace), Isabella (m. James Douglas, after his death she emigrated), Janet (m. Joseph Garvie), and Alexander (m. Jean Stewart). John and Ann emigrated to Hastings County, the others to Grey/Bruce. Alexander and Jean are my ancestors.
Jean (father - James Stewart, mother - Janet MacIntosh) was of the Athole Stewart clan. Her grandfather fought with the clan at Culloden. James was born at Kirrandrum and lived in Logierait Parish most or all of his life (96 years!).

I am new to RootsChat.com, and I am also a descendant of Alexander Fleming and Jean Stewart. I am trying to document my information, and I would be glad to see whether you and I could help each other in any way. My grandmother gave me a typewritten narrative of our family's emigration from Scotland, and you may also have a copy of the same document. My husband and I went to see Cragganfern several years ago (could not walk over the fields due to Hoof and Mouth disease, though), but we did see the tomestone of the minister who blessed them before they left on their journey.

I am also a descendant of James Stewart and Janet McIntosh and am intrigued by Lakes' information that James' father (John) fought at Culloden. Is there a record of his? I would be most interested to learn of it.
