Hi Mike,

If you can't find any of the events you are searching for on FreeBMD then you have to check the complete marriage index. If your local library has an ancestry subscription then this I think would be your first port of call (ancestry have indexed 20th century marriages)

Grace Smith - Arthur W Keable
Mar 1928 Selby 9c 1187

Doris Smith - Tom Grassby
Jun 1938 Selby 9c 2519

Several possible marriages for a Rose Smith in Selby district - do the names Frederick W Alletson or Frank Wroot ring a bell?

Mike was your Grassby a baker by any chance?  also, could Gordon Dodgson have been a milkman?

Grin  I do believe I might have known Mr and Mrs Grassby as an older couple.  We had a shop a few doors down from Mr & Mrs Grassby. I've just checked in the 1960 Selby Directory, and they were indeed Tom and doris Grassby; had a baker/confectioners shop at 59 Brook Street.  They were lovely people.  When I was little I used to see them almost every day!!
The shop is still there, but it's a hairdresser now  Smiley

Hi Itch2stitch.
thank you for your loverly response. its nice to know ,some-one.remembers them.and even went in there shop.wish i had access to the selby directorys.will pass on the address of brook street shop to uncle fred.am pretty sure he will know it,
just rose smith is bugging me at present. had a tremendous
response from Tati sent me a list of 43 marriages.from 1920-1930.alas none of the names ring a bell with fred.
wondering if married before 1920.
people did marry young .
thinking maybe when 17. that would be 1915.
so will have to seek any rose smith  marriage in selby
1915-1920.
       thanks again

Mike, it looks like Rose was living in Scalby by 1901 - parents Thomas Edward Smith and Alice [Lee] Does that sound like the same person??  Her birth registration was December quarter 1897 Selby  9c 919 , birthday 18 November 1897

That's right, mike, Bell Berry was just before the railway crossing - it's a Bangali restaurant now. A relative of the Berry family married a Laycock and they had the Handicraft shop which was about half way between Grassby's shop and Bell Berry. My Mum's shop was next door to the Handicraft shop - I'll bet Fred remembers that too [sweets and tobacco] If Fred was there in the 60s/70s I probably met him fairly frequently!
