Hello! can anyone give me any info on the Langs of Sprouston. James Lang emigrated to Canada, I think he married a Rutherford. I am interested in his ancestors.
Any help much appreciated.
Regards Ken

Hello Ken Without any dates supplied it's not certain this is the right James Lang, but there is one chr. in Sprouston 2.11.1859, son of Christopher Lang and Helen Rutherford, so it's his mother, not his wife , who is a Rutherford, unless he married a cousin. of course. Christopher Lang was chr. in Sprouston 25.9.1825, son of Walter Lang and Betty Redpath. Christopher and his wife are still living in Sprouston in 1881 where he is a joureyman mason, and there are three sons at home, including one aged 19 and one aged 23, but no James, who would have been 21, so maybe he had emigrated already.
best wishes, Lesley

Ken:
James Lang, son of Christopher Lang and Helen Rutherford married Janet Tinlin Robertson, on 24 Dec 1881 in Hebburn, England. Janet was the daughter of Robert Robertson. I have no more information on her.
James and Janet and their three children (Agnes, Helen and Janet) came to Canada (Rat Portage, Ontario - now Kenora) about 1887, presumably following his brother Walter, who was living in Rat Portage at the time. James occupation was a pattern maker at the time of his marriage and a blacksmith in the 1891 Canadian Census. In the deed to his property on Trout Lake, north of Kenora, he was described as a machinist.
James and Janet had a fourth child, Christopher, in 1888. Janet died five weeks later, presumably due to complications following childbirth.
James married again to Thirza Wilson in 1892. They subsequently had six children (Elizabeth, Amelia, James Jr., John, Gertrude, and Walter). John and Gertrude both died before their first birthday. James Sr. died in Kenora on 26 Feb 1935.
As noted by Lesley, James' paternal grandfather was Walter Lang (b. about 1791 in Roxburgshire) and his paternal grandmother was Betty Redpath (b. 1792 in Kelso, Roxburgshire).
