if you have tried all options? and thinking of binning the extrenal h/d, then you can try dismantling the external, and inside you will find a normal h/d then connect to your computer as a slave and HOPEFULLY you can retrieve the info

Last week something wierd happened to my laptop, and it crashed out on me.
Its had to have a new hard drive and I have just spent the last two days re-installing programmes and updating the software.
I just went to get the back-up of info & photos from my external drive from the last few months - I back-up every few weeks on there .......................... and its crashed too! It was linked to the computer when it crashed, so I am presuming that it got damaged when the hard drive on the computer crashed.
I DO have a second back up on the house back up drive, but thats an old one from months ago, and all of the work I have done in the last few months is gone.
Right now I just feel like screaming - or crying!
Gaille
Same thing happened to me a over the summer. My laptop did exactly the same as yours did in May, but the last back up I had was in October 2008. Was a tad annoyed to begin with but it did turn into a positive experience as I broke a few brickwalls when re-doing various lines. Must have been fresh eyes etc...

You've got me alittle worried now. How old are the affected laptops? Mine is almost 5 years old, bought in March 2005.
Mines was only about 9 months old when it broke - but it was my own fault. I tried to install a programme that was not compatible with my laptop. It froze the entire laptop so I had to shut it down incorrectly. In doing this, the harddrive got wrecked.

It froze the entire laptop so I had to shut it down incorrectly. In doing this, the harddrive got wrecked. Yeah thats pretty much what happened with mine too.
I was using the laptop in the morning, my sister-in-law came for lunch & I was showing her something online, the laptop froze up & I left it for a few minutes to 'un-freeze' itself, it didnt unfreeze so I did a ctrl-alt-delete re-boot & it just completely lost the plot.
unfortunatly when it froze my external drive was connected to it, and I am presuming that whatever caused the hard-drive to lose the plot also caused the extrenal one to as well !
This laptop is about 3 years old, lol but I also have one similar (same manufacturer, series etc) thats running fine, and that one is over 6 years ol, age isnt realy a factor I dont think, something corrupted my drive, and that can happen with any age of computer.
Whats upsetting me most is that i DID back it up, but the back up drive has gone too.................. think I am going to bring in a double back up system from now on!

Hi Gaille That's awful if you have lost everything. Why don't you put this on the Technical board, someone on there might be able to help, they seem really clever on there Good luck Jan Thanks for the suggestion
I already put a similar post n there on saturday asking if anyone could suggest how to get access to the hard-drive

I may have to persuade someone to have a go for me if needs be. Gaille Hardest part Gaille is finding where the seals/screws are to access the hard drive, depends what make it is, ie freecom ones have a few ways they are put together, screw under the sticker underneath, screws under the rubber feet, or just grooves down the sides where you have to insert a small screwdriver and prise apart, as i said best to make sure you have tried all options connecting to it first, have you tried it on another computer, with a different lead etc etc, if so then nothing to lose butchering it and they are very cheap now, it is worth trying to save a lot of searching or lost information,
maybe when you are sorted and you replace the external also get a usb "pen" for storage and save to two places as you go, i have all my important stuff on a network, so when saved it goes to various computers so chances of all of them dying at once is............my network could go awol, so i also drag the same info' onto all my computers, ie photos certificates etc etc a bit of overkill but as you have found out annoying if your hard work is wasted
