Bolton or Atherton 1951?
« on: Sunday 01 November 09 18:28 UTC (UK) »

Hi
I'm posting this on the off-chance that someone may be able to identify the building in the background of this photo and if I am really really lucky, some of the people on it!
The wedding is 1950 - 51, most likely at a Church in Bolton, although they could possibly be in Atherton. There are RC and Methodists on this photo, so if it is a Church it could be either denomination.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed,
Regards
Paula

Hi Dotty
Unfortunately I don't know the wedding couples names. I do know my maternal grandparents are on it - Thomas and Miah Barnes, my mother Myra Eckersley nee Barnes and I'm the little girl on the right.
I am almost sure too that when I was around 10 or 11 I met the older lady on the right at the front. I think she may be my grandfather's sister who lived in Atherton.

Hi Dotty
There were two great -aunts who lived together in a small terraced house in Atherton when I remember them. I don't recall any men about the place and don't know if either of them had ever been married, although I have a hazy recollection of a boy being around, slightly older than me.
One great-aunt was Sarah Ellen born 1891 and the other Nancy born 1896. Their parents were John Barnes and Sarah Cunliffe. I have them on census up to 1911 but no marriage records for them.

For some reason I  have a feeling the lady in the photograph is Nancy, but I could be wrong. I think I only met grandad's two sisters two or three times, the last time probably 50 years ago.

Regards

I really did think it was Atherton Parish church but my husband said the doorway was to narrow to get so many people across it.

Hi

The church looks very much like Atherton Parish to me too.

Hi Dotty and Del, because of what you've said I've been googling photos of Atherton Parish Church and whilst I can't get a photo of the Church from the same angle as my pic, I do think it looks to be the same door. I'm going to do a bit of digging on my great aunts, see if either of them did marry and have children.
Thanks for your help
