Dufour Family - New York Immigration
« on: Sunday 01 November 09 18:40 UTC (UK) »

Please could someone with a US or Worldwide Ancestry subscription look up the following family for me?

Alexander Vernier Dufour b.1831 London
Sarah Ann Dufour b. 1825 Brighton
Sarah Marguerite Dufour b. 1857 Ramsgate, Kent
Isaac Grenville Dufour b. 1860 Brighton
Alice Ellen Grenville Dufour b. 1861 Brighton

We think the family emigrated between 1865 and 1871. We know that Isaac was naturalised as a US citizen in 1892 in New York. If you find them, any info would be very gratefully received.

Many thanks,

Sarah and Jenny

Sarah and Jenny:

I cannot view further details, but A V Dufour, born 1831, arrived in Quebec in 1868.  Perhaps someone else will be able to view the record.

They were living in South Orange, Essex County, New Jersey in 1870:
A F S Defom, born c1832, England, cannot read occupation
Sarah A, age 45, England, Housekeeping
Margaret, age 13, England
Isaac, age 10, England
Alice, age 9, England
Last name, on image, looks like Defom or Defour.
The family is listed on the bottom of page 6, Alice is listed on the top of page 7 and her surname is spelled Dufom or Dufour.

County Court, Richmond County (New York)
Isaac Granville Dufour, born 1859, naturalized 6 October 1892.
He was living on Bay St. Stapleton, Richmond County, New York.
He was a deckhand.  He arrived in 1868.  Port of arrival in the U.S. has a line through it...perhaps he didn't know where they arrived?

Hi Lisa,

This is absolutely great info - thank you so much for your trouble as it has really helped us fill in some gaps in the Grenville/Dufour family. Sarah Dufour, nee Grenville was the elder sister of our forebear George Grenville. She was also the aunt of the famous portrait painter Reginald Grenville Eves. The National Portrait Gallery in London has a number of his works - we have recently been to see those currently on display.

Thanking you again,

Sarah and Jenny

You are welcome.

1880 (June 4) census for Richmond (Staten Island), New York, New York
Sarah A. Defoar, born c1825, England.  Parents born England.  Widowed.

#107 (no street name given) was apparently a hospital.  At this address: matron, 2 nurses, cook, 8 patients.  Sarah is listed as a patient.

After seeing image, Dufoar could be Dufour.

There is a possibility that Alexander Dufour died in England in 1879.  The very short article mentions Prof. Dufour, and refers to him "formerly of Staten Island."  His wife and children were still in Stapleton, Staten Island.
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9405E5D91F3FE63BBC4D52DFBF668382669FDE
However, there were other Dufour's in that part of New York.

I didn't want to guess at Alexander's occupation in 1870, as I was so unsure.  However, I did think it started with "Prof."
It could be Prof of Rhetoric.

Hi Sarah and Jenny: Not much to contribute, except to clarify that Staten Island, (one of New York City's five boroughs) and Richmond are one and the same place. That is, Staten Island makes up Richmond County, New York.

1880 Image shows: the town of Southfield, in the County of Richmond, New York
Alice Du Four (image is: Dufour), born c1861, England, Single, Servant
Living with Oscar B. Janin and family.  Oscar was a clerk, born New York.
Minnie Cromer, age 25 was also a servant at this address.

Alice seems to be a servant for Oscar A. Janin in the 1930 Census.  They appear to be living at 242 Madison St. in Brooklyn, NY.  It says Alice was age 62, single, b. England, parents b. England, immigrated 1868, naturalized, servant for private family.

In the 1886 Staten Island, New York directory, there is a listing for a Mrs. Dufour living at "130 N Y avenue, C", an Oscar A. Janin and an Oscar B. Janin at "97 N Y avenue, C"  Oscar B.'s occupation was dry goods, and Oscar A.'s was clerk
