Betty & Elizabeth-the same or different people
« on: Sunday 01 November 09 21:36 UTC (UK) »

Hello

I have a problem with the use of a christian name in parish register of Leigh.  I am tracing the Drinkwater family who lived in the borders of Worcestershire & Gloucestershire.

I have traced William Drinkwater back to a marriage to Betty Oakey in Leigh in 1778.  There are no other Drinkwaters in the parish at the time.

Betty is called Betty when baptised, married and buried.  But the children they baptise from the date of their marriage until 1794 are said to be those of William and Elizabeth Drinkwater.  I think these must be the same couple but if these are being recorded by the same cleric as when married why the change in christian name?
Is there any way I can verify this is the correct couple?  Could they have requested a different version of her name when baptising?
I am pretty sure it is the same couple I would just like some opinions please.
Thanks

Just a couple of thoughts:

Have you seen the parish register entries, or are you quoting IGI entries?  Sometimes there is more information on the PRs to give a clue, ie address or occuption to help verify the right family.

Could William have decided that he preferred his wife to be called Elizabeth?  Or even the cleric - did he decide that Betty was the diminutive of Elizabeth and make the wrong assumption?

It's hard to know.

Thanks for that.  I am quoting from the registers.  I have been thinking it was something that William may have asked for.  There are lots of alternative names in my tree where they are  baptised with a different name from that recorded in the censuses.  I suppose I will never know for sure.  Given that they are the only Drinkwater couple in the register for that period I must assume it is them.
