I did what you suggested (Network wasn't on Desktop but is now!!).  I still got to the same place as using C:\windows\system32\ncpa.cpl in Search.

No NetBIOS at all.

That's how it should be, it's just an alternative route - just trying to cover the options seeing as there are so many set-ups in Vista  Smiley

Did you just check your laptop or did you also check your husband's PC (the one on which the games were installed)? As mentioned it is likely to be that machine that is the source of the problem.

Of course, if it was a game installation which also installed NetBIOS and that game has subsequently been uninstalled then it might also have taken NetBIOS with it.

Haven't checked husband's PC and he's turned it off for the night.  I'll check it tomorrow.  As far as I know he's not uninstalled the games yet.  Problem is the grandsons will be here again on Friday night and will want to play the games again.

Should have said it's mainly the 11 year old who downloads from DVDs, and as he buys them 2nd hand from a local (to us) shop, they could well be corrupted, although they shouldn't be as they are all genuine DVDs.

I wouldn't expect any corruption of the software. What I suspect is that an older game installs NetBIOS by default (similar to the manner in which some install routines place an icon on the desktop without asking).

It may be that the game runs perfectly well without NetBIOS, just depends on the software. Certainly uninstalling NetBIOS would prove that one way or the other  Smiley

Just checked husband's PC, no sign of NetBIOS, so whatever was causing the problem has disappeared as has the red warnings I was getting.

I'm going to close this thread now.

Many thanks to all.
