Ann - yes it does look like plaits if you look closely, you're right.
Thanks everyone, I find it really fascinating.

I would suggest a date of early - mid 1860's for the 1st.The lady's dress style began to fade around mid decade, her hairstyle allows part of her ears to show which would suggest an early 60's date, just on the cusp of the chignon style emerging at this time. The "plait" is probably a hairpiece which were quite common more so as hairstyles became more elaborate.1860-4.
The trio is a little harder as older people tended not to keep up with fashion. The lady is wearing a day dress from the 60's.The gent is also wearing a style from the 60's which prevailed well into the 70's.His shirt & cravat are an 1870's style. There's not much to see of the girl but what there is looks 1870's also.To get a more accurate date these need to be scanned at 300dpi  in colour & we need to see all of the card plus the back.
The young woman can be dated to 1889-93.

Edit:
The photo of the 2 women outside the barn was taken about 1912-14 & they look about 40 & 70 if that helps.

Thank you Jim. I do know the identity of those in the photo of the trio.
The grandparents were born in 1815, and the child born 1870.  so makes sense that it's taken early to mid 1870s
thanks
