Nellie Short for ...............?
« on: Monday 02 November 09 05:55 UTC (UK) »

Is someone able to tell me what "Nellie" is short for, or is it a full name?

Thanks

Something else to consider is the date Les, some kids were christened Nellie after Dame Nellie Melba.
Nellie is not necessarily a derivation of any of the names I mentioned - a child may well have been christened Nell / Nellie.

Bit More,

I have several forebears named "Nellie" on their NSW birth certificates, from as early as 1880's....  I also have others named Ellen, and one of my "Ellen" lasses was always known as "Nell" and another always known as "Nellie".... in fact, twas as "Nellie" that she gained her divorce !

On the other hand, back in 1820's NSW Muster, I have found one of my Ellen lasses listed as "Eleanor" but with her maiden name, rather than her NSW married name.... umm, and she was noted as being the housekeeper for her husband....

We have had a chuckle over our "Eleanor" cause its possible her Irish accent messed up the clerk recording that muster....  She's there under her married name in earlier and later musters and the 1828 census...  We reckon she could have said "Ellen  .....  OR ......" .... her married surname was Spanish, and her maiden name was Irish....

But also, if looking for "Helen" also consider "Helena" and "Helanor" .... I've got those names on some NSW certificates too....

In my families, those named Mary Ellen were known as Nellie, whilst those named Mary were often known as Polly.

But now I'm into 1928 marriages on FreeBMD transcriptions, I'm finding a lot of "Nellie" as a stand-alone name.

Thanks for those replies. The Nellie I am inquiring about was b.abt.1885 Tasmania. At this stage, I can't find her birth, but in 1904, she was described as "Miss N" in a newspaper article. I can't find any other close relations named Ellen, Eleanor, etc, from whom she may have been named after.

Les,
Apologies to you if this is obvious.

Have you tried searching using 'wildcards'?

http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=8

Search for surname but with given name as ...." *el* ".  That should give you all names with "el" either at the beginning or in the middle of the name.
You can use the same system for surnames if it is a surname with possible variations, eg, in my case, " for*est* " would give forest, forrest, forester and forrester.

Dave

PS - 'wildcards' don't work on every site. However, they do on the Tasmanian link I've mentioned.

Thanks Dave. Unfortunately, I can't do wi*d car*s (poor attempt at humour), on the Tasmanian Pioneers search engine, but will be going to the library to check the reliable(?) microfiche/microfilm records.

Dave

I'll have to take my last comment back about *ild *ards on the Tasmanian Pioneer site. It did work, but unfortunately there was nothing there that helped me.

Pity, but it's a good tip to remember.

It was only after a few years of searching records that someone told me about it and thereafter, I found an abundance of records I'd missed before.
