Pre WW1 Aust. Navy records
« on: Monday 02 November 09 06:43 UTC (UK) »

Is there any source for finding service records of someone who appears to have been in the navy only prior to WW1?

We have a photograph supposedly taken on his 21st birthday in 1904 showing HMS Challenger on his hatband, an S.A. Police Gazette reference to him deserting from HMS Psyche in 1907 and a story involving a family painting of HMS Katoomba, on which he was supposed to have served at some time.

He was married in 1915 and seems to have had no connection with the navy by then.

The deserter reference gives his correct name with a slight error, but a name search on the AWM site produces no results.

I would be grateful for a push in the right direction.

Hi there,

from the above link it seems likely that your chap's records may be in the Royal Navy....  as it was their responsibility to protect Aussie waters ..... Ummm  Wink

Do you have the more names of the ships he may have served on ?

Cheers,

JM

Hi JM

Thanks for the link, and I will look at it, but I have already looked at a brief outline of the early Aust. Navy by Commodore Jim Dickson MBE AM RAN Ret'd, which says, in part:
"On 1st March 1901, only 2 months after the proclamation of federation the Australian Commonwealth Defence Act was passed, transferring the several colonial naval forces and establishments to the commonwealth. For practical reasons the states were permitted to administer the units of the new commonwealth naval force under the previous colonial state acts and regulations up until February1904 when the commonwealth was ready to assume full control.
Commonwealth Navy Headquarters were established in Melbourne and remained here for 61 years."

Didy

The ships I mentioned are the only ones we have any knowledge of.

Hi Didy,

The opening paragraph on that link I posted suggests that there was a squadron of the RN stationed in Aus until 1913.... hence my question about other vessels...

I think you will find that the records by Commodore Dickson refers to the transferring of each of the colonies/states own vessels to the Commonwealth....

If your chap was RN rather than RAN then his naval records would probably be UK based...  .... Just Moi Opinion, of course, and I could well be sidetracking you, but if you cannot find RAN records, do try RN records...

Cheers,

JM

Re HMS Challenger

http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home

This is one of the best sites around, its the National Library of Australia's latest big project, digitising newspapers from as early as 1803....

just type in HMS Challenger, and you will have lots of clues as to the voyages in Aussie waters...  perhaps the other HMS ships that your chap was on are also mentioned...

Enjoy...

Hi Didy,

I spotted a newspaper cutting at the NLA's website that I linked earlier.... it's about a naval deserter ex HMS Pysche... in the Tassie paper The Mercury, Monday 6 May 1907....  the chap's name is mentioned in the article....

Perhaps if you list your chap's name here at RChat we could advance your own searchings a bit for you?

Many Cheers,

JM

JM, I really appreciate your searches and references. I have looked at the NLA offerings, but no joy with any appropriate references. There are lots of mentions of the ships, but the problem is knowing the periods he was likely to be serving on them. I have even found a picture or two of the vessels.

What I'm really hoping to find is an organisation which might have the actual service records.

Thanks again,

Didy

Hi Jenn

It's a terrific site, with lots of interesting stuff, but I haven't had enough time yet to see if there are links to actual records. Even if there's not, it certainly fills out the picture with general backgound.

Ta muchly,

Didy.

Thats good  I  believe  there is more there when you get the time to browse

I  feel that you could contact  the site owner who has done such a wonderfull job with it all, and see if he might offer some further advice to you.
