Tonbridge - Star & Garter
« on: Monday 02 November 09 08:01 UTC (UK) »

I have a suspicion that the following two photographs are of the same pub, the Star & Garter in London Road Tonbridge.

http://www.closedpubs.co.uk/kent/tonbridge_stargarter.html

http://www.tonbridgehistory.org.uk/photos/other-roads-and-streets/slides/15.Lond1.html

However, there appears to be some detailed differences between the photographs and I would appreciate it if anyone who knows the area can confirm this.

Hi

I am very familiar with the area you are seeking advice on.

The 1st photo is correct; it was the Star & Garter pub which was demolished a few years ago after having been derelict for some years. The pub stood on a main V junction at the top end of the town virtually opposite the Tonbrige School.  The land it stood on is now vacant and grassed.

To explain how this area appears on the ground I suggest you look at google maps. The area of land in question is a triangle, the Star & Garter fronted the junction of the B245 (London Road) and A227 (Shipbourne Road), with Old London road forming the 3rd road at the rear.  The pub frontage looked down the A227 into the high street. On the map I am looking at Eton Vetinary Clinic is shown opposite.

The 2nd photo is the rear of this triangle piece of land and the main building in the centre is still there today (used to be an estate agents).  So, Old London Rd is the road on the left side of the photo and the B245 London Road is on the right side.  The Star & Garter would be just slightly around the corner behind the carriage.

Hope this helps and if you need any more information I am more than happy to help.

Jamaine,

The First picture (before it was demolished) was taken pointing North looking up from the High Street

The Second picture is taken from the rear looking in a south easterly direction, coming down London Road, which  then connects onto the High Street shown in the First picture

Hope this makes sense - if not see Google Maps to see the triangle where the High Street connects onto London Road,

Regards,
