English migrant in Iowa
« on: Monday 02 November 09 08:57 UTC (UK) »

Hello All,
I have hit a brick wall with one of my ancestors.
It would seem that Edwin Coombe, born 1826 in Pershore, England, moved to Iowa in 1849. I have located a 1850 census return showing Edwin, his wife and son living in Keokuk, Iowa.
The problem is I cannot locate any other information on him or his wife.
I do know that his son George Silvester returned to England sometime before 1861, where on census night he is residing with his grandparents.
Can any one help me by letting me know what resources are available for furthuring my research.

I don't see anything for Coombe's on the following sites:
http://www.interment.net/data/us/ia/lee/keokuknat/index_cd.htm
http://www.interment.net/data/us/ia/scott/oakdale/index.htm
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi
(More to come)
I didn't check for other spellings.

I didn't check this site out.  Perhaps there might be something helpful:
http://iagenweb.org/keokuk/

And, another (good) site:

This is probably not your family, but mentioning it anyway (in case Edwin went back to England, either remarried, or Mary used a middle name?):
passenger list for the Manchester, arriving Philadelphia, PA on 26 May 1854 from Liverpool.
H W Coombe, born c1849 is one passenger.  He is listed with:
Edwin Coombe, age 28, Plasterer
Susan?, age 26
Geo, age 3?

You could check to see how many H W Coombe's were born in England c1849.

Would you know if Edwin had a middle initial or name, please?

Thank you for your help Smiley
I have just been over the limited records I have and there is no use of a middle name or initial.

Regarding the other Coombe family you found travelling to America, it is possible there is a connection but the details don't quite match.
Edwin had a brother called Herbert (no middle name ever mentioned) , born in 1830. Herbert married a woman named Sarah. In all the census returns he is listed as a bricklayer.

Edwin had a son called George Silvester, I am not aware of the names of any other children.
