Havelock is an unusual middle name to have.Is that on his birth cert or did he addopt it later in life. That might make a difference to searches Undecided

Hi Celia,

It's on his Birth Cert...(see snip attached).

After much searching...I came to the conclusion that the 'Havelock' part of his name was in tribute of Joseph Havelock Wilson, - who was Leader of the Seaman's Union at the time of my Uncle's Birth. Joseph Havelock Wilson came from Sunderland, & its interesting that the Taylor & Sanderson Steam Shipping Company also came from that part of the world. (I don't know if there was any link to my Wilsons...because I'm unable to find my Grandfather, William James Wilson (1860-1937) prior to the 1901 Census for Wales).

Romilly.

Hi Romilly,

All the overseas navy ships in the 1911 census are under the RD640 registration district. It is not good news I'm afraid.  Sad

Incidentally, RD641 is Military.

Thanks for that Paul.

As I said...I've probably reached the end of the road with this one...its just frustrating, because I would so like to have found him

Hi, "Romilly"
Glad to see that you are getting somewhere with this.
Chatham was a naval college all the way back to Nelsons time. If you could write to Portsmouth RNR they may either have his records or tell you where to find them. Just a thought.

Hi Marcie Dean,

I have William Havelock Wilson's RNR Service Record. I obtained it from The Flight Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton, - (I'm not sure why they have them, but they hold most of the WW1 RNR Service Records, - the rest are at Kew).

Unfortunately, his Service Record only covers WW1 RNR, & has nothing about his Merchant Navy Service; which was prior to WW1.

Sorry, I just thought that being near Portsmouth a very large shipping port and a naval port to boot, that they may hold some records.  So if he was on board at the time in port there, the census would go to the local area rather than his home port of swansea. Undecided
marcie....

And now you have said this, I remember we had this discussion before. Smiley

You know as you speak or write a sentence, sometimes a word evades you, so you get annoyed and walk away from it, trying to forget it before it sends you nuts.  Then suddenly something pops into your head which gives you the right answer or the way forward.

Don't give up, at some point it will happen.  Just do not allow it to become a large problem, and it will resolve itself.

Romilly it will be alright eventually, you'll see.
