Historic photo - One for restoring and dating
« on: Monday 02 November 09 11:48 UTC (UK) »

The original of this photo is a glass plate negative.

Can anyone -

1. Suggest a date for the photo?
2. Estimate the ages of the ladies?
3. Attempt a restoration?

Nigel

Hello Nigel
Look like mother & daughter don't they.
Late 1850's - v.early 1860's I would suggest.The pagoda style
sleeves on both ladies was an end of decade fashion.
Early -mid 60's younger women tended to have the hairstyle
that exposed their ears in order to wear those dangly earrings popular at the time.
Mid 20's & 45-50 for ages in my view.
Lovely photo.

Iria - Your restoration is great. Many thanks.

The original photo is about 150 years old (an ambrotype I believe) and showing signs of its age. Such photos also do not show fine detail. The restorations by everyone are, therefore, excellent.

Some further comments from Rotschat members regarding the date of the photo and ages of the ladies would be very welcome. I am still trying to work out which of my 3G grandmothers and daughters are in this photo.

Hi Iria,

i think you meant to say silverfish (you typed sliverfish) but i'd never heard of them doing this sort of damage before. Wikipedia has a picture of similar damge to a book cover caused by silverfish.
I don't know what it is about silverfish but i just think they are disgusting - YUK.

Anyway sliverfish is a better name for them slimy things.
