Not to Keen on Silverfish either ..But glad to say i haven't seen one since i was Quite small ..thay always used to be in our bathroom sink  Sad

I have seen a Few Photo's on here thats been damaged by them ..But as nigel Stated this is a ambrotype so not sure if Silverfish done the damage

Nigel i was Looking at the Photo and the Dress and Hairstyles seem to date from 1850s-1860's

If it's an ambrotype then the white areas are where the black backing varnish has rubbed or flaked off.  If you put a piece of black card or fabric behind the picture, you should be able to see it as good as new!

Alternatively, just look at the beautiful restores that people have done for you  Smiley Smiley Smiley

Another excellent restoration and which is much appreciated.

From all of the restorations I am left wondering though as to what was the real colour of the young lady's clothing and what may have been popular at the time!

Hi Prue,

Yes, you are correct about the nature of the damage.

A standard scanner was used to produce the image for this thread (and which has a white backing) so that the damage to part of the black backing was apparent.
