Broadband Router advice please COMPLETED
« on: Monday 02 November 09 12:09 UTC (UK) »

My broadband connection goes live tomorrow (TalkTalk) but the router is still in the postal system somewhere.

I have a BT router left here when son moved out.

I spoke to TalkTalk and I think the chap said I could use the BT one instead.

Is this possible?

Any advice/suggestions very welcome.  I am a complete novice in all things to do with computers.   Roll Eyes

Thanks,

Yes you can use another brand of modem/router to connect to your ISP but you will need to change a few things if you used that modem/router to connect to another ISP in the past.

The best thing to do is connect to your modem/router vendor's website and read their tutorial about how to setup the device.

Thanks downside and les_looking,

Just found the BT box of tricks and it is a hub.

As I have no technical/computer knowledge I think the best thing is to wait patiently for the correct item to arrive for TalkTalk..........

you cannot just plug in the Hub, also depending if its a v1 or v2 some of what you have to do is pretty technical, IF there is going to be much of a delay, maybe think about buying a netgear router (you can get a basic one for £25-£30)
it wouldnt be a total waste as always handy to have a spare for an emergency, setting up the netgear is only what your going to have to do when you get your talk talk one, i assume you have received your user and password from talk talk?
if you are migrating then hopefully your old isp should stay on a few days over Wink

Thanks for the netgear router suggestion; I will look into that possibility if the router does not arrive this week.

I have the user and password from TalkTalk, plus a disc......just waiting for the router!
