Last Voices of World War One
« on: Monday 02 November 09 16:34 UTC (UK) »

Bit late with this.  Every afternoon this week, Channel 4, 2.20pm there is a programme of men who survived WWI talking about their experiences, film shots of battles too.

I only caught the last 10 minutes or so, I don't usually watch TV until the News at 6pm, but was scanning the TV programme to see if anything worth watching tonight and noticed it.

this programme was first shown last year before Remembrance Sunday (i think)
sadly when first shown/filmed about 4-5 of the survivors were still alive, now all gone Sad
worth a 2nd or even 3rd look

These were also shown just after Henry Allingham & Harry Patch died on (i think) the history channel, I have all 3 recorded, but I havent managed to get thru the 3rd one yet, the whoe series is very evocative and I actualy find them difficult not to get too involved in - I watched the 1st one in tears

Definatly should be compulsive veiwing in schools in my opinion.

If you missed any, S4C (Channel 4 Wales) are showing them next week, I think, mornings; outside Wales you should find it on Sky, I believe.

second thoughts, they may only be on analogue.

Sad Unless you can receive S4C's analogue broadcasts next week it looks as if this is all you'll get.
But . . .  :)as the series has had several showings already it's very likely to come round again. Sometime . . .

Glad you enjoyed it.  I've yet to watch Friday's programme, grandchildren intervened - so I'll catch up with it on Monday.

There is a book called Forgotten Voices of World War One. It's one of a series that also covers WWII.

Having read some of the narratives about the verbal abuse some of thoses soldiers received back home in Britain, it makes me realise that the verbal abuse some of our injured soldiers have been getting today, especially the insults said to the soldier who lost his legs and an arm in Afghanistan, people who haven't been in battle can still be hurtful.
