Joseph Cubby/Elizabeth Cubby 1818 - Where did they die??
« on: Monday 02 November 09 16:55 UTC (UK) »

My great great grandfather Joseph Cubby b1818 in Cumberland can be found in the 1861 Census in Wigan, Lancashire where he is a Blacksmith.
His wife Elizabeth (Nee Williamson) b1818 in Carlisle is with him, she is a dressmaker,  (their daughter Elizabeth was to become my great grandmother).
I am then unable to find either Joseph or Elizabeth in any subsequent Census returns??
My great grandmother Elizabeth is boarding in Wigan and she married the following year staying down here - their remaining family are either married or boarding in Lancashire so where did Joseph and Elizabeth die??
I found a death for a Joseph Cubby in 1862 in Whitehaven and an Elizabeth Cubby in 1863 in Carlisle but how can I be sure these are the right people??
Can you please help me I would love to know where they are buried - I did go up to Carlisle to visit St. Cuthberts where they married.

There was a baby Joseph CUBBY in Whitehaven in 1861 who doesn't appear to be around in 1871.  I think that may be the 1862 death.

Thank you for that information Geoff.

It does make it difficult when the ages are not listed on BMD - if they are you can at least has at a guess and order the certificate.

You could try contacting the local register office about them and say you only want the certificate if Elizabeth is described as wife or widow of Joseph.  They are usually very helpful in that way.    If it is your Elizabeth that might help to show if Joseph is still living in 1863.   Or you could search 1861 to see if there is another Elizabeth Cubby in the Carlisle area then.

The Joseph Cubby who died in Whitehaven in 1862 was just 1 year old - well spotted GeoffE.

I will have to continue to search - his brother Richard b1830 went to live in New Jersey so maybe Joseph and Elizabeth together with their son also Richard b1845 followed him out there.
