Hearts of Oak - Friendship Society

Can anyone shed any light on what the Hearts of Oak - Friendship Society used to be, I am told that my Grandfather Dickerson born 1879, had a certificate hanging on his wall, but nobody seems to know what is was for, or where the certificate went.

Wow! I don't know what the certificate looked like, or anything about it, so it could will be it. 
I put it in google and had no luck.
