DIAPER, James - Mariner - b. 1831
« on: Monday 02 November 09 19:42 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone have on their tree a James Diaper b. 1831 (place of birth possibly London) mariner who married Sarah Levett from Suffolk. I am looking for his parents, father was also named James and might have been a gardner or a butler.

Jennifer - If it would help, James was married 1855, St Philip, Stepney, Tower Hamlets, Middlesex and by what I could make out his father was a gardener at that time, not deceased.

From the marriage register St Philip Stepney

1855, 8th November

James Diaper, full age, bachelor, mariner, of 3 Philpot Street, father James Diaper Gardener
Sarah Levett, full, age, spinster, no occ, father William Levett deceased Master Mariner
after banns
both signed
witnesses: Charles Sheppard, Lucy Levett both signed

From the baptism register St Philip Stepney

Lucy Elizabeth (parents) James & Sarah Diaper (of) 17 Cottage Lane (Quality Trade or profession) Mariner

27 October 1861
James Charles (parents) James & Sarah Diaper (of) 17 Broomhead Street (QTP) Mariner

James is away from home on the 1861 census.

Sarah, Lucy and an older son William are at 17 Brromhead Street Stepney, RG9/293/56/19

No apparent baptism for James c1831 on the LMA dataset.

Thankyou to Evie. JenniferC and Dawn for all your replies.
I do have quite a lot of information on James Diaper (my2xgrt grandfather) including marriage certificates, his children and his death certificate but I can't find any birth/baptismal records which could enable me to go back further and find his place of birth and parents.
In the 1861 census he is at sea and possibly in the 1871 (name spelt Draper) he is also at sea.
I shall keep hunting!
Thankyou Smiley
