Anne,

I think that this could be your family in 1901.

1 Chiltern Street, Sculcoates

Thomas R Gould     46       Mar                                       born Hull
Sarah Gould           43       Mar                                       born Hull
George A Gould      18       Son                                      born Hull
Emily Gould             15       Dau  Assistant in Pawn Shop  born Hull
Amy A Gould           13       Dau                                      born Hull
Wilfred Gould           7        Son                                      born Hull
Rose A Gould           5      Dau                                       born Hull

The ecclesiastical parish is Newington, St. John the Baptist.

I am struggling to read Thomas and George's occupation but Thomas is shown as an employer.  Maybe if you could confirm his occupation in 1891 I could see whether it resembles the occupation recorded in 1901.

I hope that this information is of some use and if I can be of any further help, just let me know.

Best Wishes

Hello CJL

Thank you very much for doing this look up for me.  Thomas' occupation was a Butcher.  This is the right family as I have Sarah Gould on the 1911 census as a widow with children Emily, Amy, Wilfred and Rose.

Thank you again

Hi Anne and CJL

Looking at his occupation in 1901

I agree it is difficult to make out but it looks like :

Master ?  Drover and as he was an employer the master bit would fit.

A drover, drove cattle, sheep etc to market so I think this would fit in with the occupation of a butcher

Hi Evie and CJL:

I have just been looking at the occupations of the Gould and Randerson families ( they are connected) and they are all involved in the butchers trade.  But a Master Cattle drover could be the occupation...

Thank you both for your help.  I wonder  if any of them had a butchers shop in the Hull area. Going to check that out today.

Cheers

Hi Anne,

You are most welcome.  Having taken another look at the census image, I am inclined to agree with Evie that Thomas' occupation is listed as Master Drover.  His son George's occupation is listed as Drover.

Good luck with your future research.

Best Wishes
