Hi, I'm researching a distant relative who seemed to have had a fair number of occupations throughout the records I have of him: coal porter, brick worker, even gamekeeper. I'm hoping someone can decipher his occupation listed in the 1841 Census. His name is James Chamberlain and the reference is HO107/1043/4. Thanks in advance. Bob C

Is he the 35 yr old, in Ipswich, not bn in county, wife Mary and 5 children? Comes up with ref HO107 1043 15 (not 4)?
If so, occupation is Carpenter.
If not him, then can you tell us how old, what family, where living etc your one is?

Hi Many thanks for your kind reply. No, the reference is correct, but I think ypu've hit on a 'parallel family' like I did when I started researching. My family have been erroneously mis-transcribed as ChamberlaND instead of ChamberlaIN. Sorry, I didn't mention that at the time. The family I have are:
James Chamberland 35 Mary Ann Chamberland 30 Mary Ann Chamberland 11 Alfred Chamberland 1 Clara Chamberland 10 Emily Chamberland 6 James Chamberland 35 Robert Chamberland 3 Regards Bob C

OK got it
Occupation that looks like "Caulimetor" ?
Although if you analyse it letter by letter it doesnt look like it, I do wonder if it is Carpenter, because there is a carpenter on the previous page which does look similar. But I am far from convinced.

Thanks for that, Liz. I actually think I've found out what it is - I remember on one census he was a coal porter, so I looked up on the Old Occupations website and there is a 'coalmeter' listed, apparently one who measured coal. Think that might be it!

Hi
Going off previous occupations and what lizdb thought it looked like this gave me an idea.
How about coul (coal) meter
It was a person who measured the coal.
