The Wheatsheaf Inn, Long Bennington
« on: Monday 02 November 09 21:58 UTC (UK) »

Would anyone happen to have any records of the Licensees / Landlords / Owners of The Wheatsheaf between 1800-1860? I thought there might be some reference in Pigot’s & Co directories.

I have a will of a GG grandfather Hart Buck, a draper of Grantham from early 1800s to about 1858.

Hart Buck’s will states he owned the Wheatsheaf and 2 cottages adjoining at his death in 1858. I have found no evidence that he or any of the Buck family managed the inn but Hart Buck’s first wife Jane SMITH was born in Long Bennington and her father was Joseph Smith (farmer, Church Warden at Long Bennington Church). Joseph Smith married Jane MILLIGAN - 11 Aug 1778 Long Bennington, Lincolnshire.

Hi Susan,

In Grantham in News books there are 2 Wheatsheaf Inns mentioned in GRANTHAM.

1851-1875 & 1875-1900

It gives  Inner Street Grantham  & Little Gonerby Grantham.

I can check in Grantham library to see if I can find who lived there.

Hi Kathy

Thank you for your offer.

I think one of the Grantham Journal items refers to the notice of an auction sale of The Wheatsheaf in Nov 1858 just before the death of Hart Buck in Dec 1858. I have a photocopy of this advert from the newspaper.

I did not know about the reference to The Wheatsheaf in the 1875-1900 News Book but if it is not too much trouble for you it would be interesting to know, thanks.

Cheers Susan
