Can anyone try and make head or tail of these two occupations?
I can make out 'In Her Majesty's ____ Service' but the missing word is tough.
The second is just gibberish
Have a look and I'd appreciate any suggestions

It looks to me like Preventive Service and the other one like Preventyman though what this/these might be I haven't a clue!

Just done a quick 'define' on google. The only preventive allied to government were disease control and warfare! Preventy man drew a blank.
What year are we talking about?

Thank for replying
I wondered about 'preventyman' but it's just nonsense
OH, hang on a sec. Preventive Service is a good one though! I just Googled it and apparently it's to do with preventing smuggling, sort of like Customs and Excise!
There's a website here:
http://www.hm-waterguard.org.uk/
Fantastic! So 'preventy man', although it only gets three hits on Google, must be related. This is good news.
Thank you so much!

Preventive Officer is now a rank in HM Customs and Excise. Your man's a smuggler catcher, I think.
Mike
You got there before me
'Preventive service' unlocked the mystery.
Thanks to all!
(P.S the year was before 1845 as it appears as the father's occupation on a marriage certificate).

So how come you get three hits on Google when it just laughed at me and asked for an alternative

So how come you get three hits on Google when it just laughed at me and asked for an alternative I was mistaken, lol. I only got one hit back. It was trying to show me 'preventy man' as a typo in something:
"in the Greek fable who wanted to preventy man- kind form having the secret of fire. But Prometheus stole the secret of fire for the benefit of mankind. .."

Maybe "where" would be better confirmation than "when"?
Mike
Bethnal Green (although the woman marrying seems to have been born in Southend - the first pic comes from her first marriage in 1845. The second pic is from her second marriage in 1870. The occupation is that of her father).
