Louisa Quarman (completed with many thanks)
« on: Monday 02 November 09 23:48 UTC (UK) »

Hello all,

I have a Louisa Quarman married to a John Jones June quarter 1859.

Could anybody supply me with any information about Louisa?  My information is she was 39 when she married, so perhaps there is a chance she was married and widowed.

All thoughts greatly appreciated

Leandra Embarrassed

Hi Leandra

I see they married in Plymouth district, Devon.

Do you place them (in Gloucestershire?) in the 1861 Census or later?

Cheers

Hi  AMBLY,

I am sorry I didn't explain very well Embarrassed  My aunt asked me to try to find out about Louisa, all she could tell me was she married in Plymouth, but was originally from Bristol, but she has no paperwork so can't be 100% sure.

Hi Leandra

As Ambly says, it would help us a lot if you had the information for Louisa in 1861 and later - and posted it here!

I've had a quick look and can't identify Louisa in early censuses from what you've told us so far.

I am assuming you haven't got the marriage certificate - yet you know her age - please post what you know in order to help us to help you.

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Hi Arranroots,

Thanks for reading the post.  I am sorry about the lack of information but I have nothing else.  My Aunt had some papers passed to her that had Louisa's age at marrige.  I couldn't find her on census before 1861, which made me think she may have been married before, but I found no record of a Quarman marrige that would fit her age (bearing in mind her age was correct on the paperwork Huh)  I don't have acess to the Devon census (marrige Plymouth).

Regards Leandra

Hi Leandra

Does anyone know whether Louisa had children?  Where did she live in later life and where did she die?  Have you bought the marriage certificate?  The record won't be online I'm afraid (other than the reference number which you've already found).

You'd be surprised what you know that might help!

Hello Merryhow,Hepburn and Arranroots,

Thankyou all, you have been very kind helping. I have been having another wee think today and I am convinced (I think!) that Louisa would not have been 39 when she married.  I found another Louisa Quarman born in March Q 1842, which would make her 17 at marrige.  I also found some of Louisa and John Henrys children born in New Zealand the first being born in1875 which would have her at age 34,  it does sound more likely do you think.

Thanks again for your help and I apoligise for sending you on a wild goose chase

Kind regards

Leandra

Hi Leandra

Definitely more likely   Grin  no way she could have been 39 in 1859 if she was producing children in 1875.
Seems like it was her mother, also Louisa, who was about 39 in 1859.......her mother being the 1 Louisa QUARMAN we could all see born about the right time to be 39 in 1859  but who was in the Census up to 1871 as Mrs QUARMAN.

Here they are in 1861:

Your Louisa, Mrs Jones, is in the same house as her parents. The Census makes it quite clear they are all in the same dwelling house. It's occupied by 3 seperated groups each on their own Schedule:

1861: 8 Bishop Street - Bristol, Bedminster,  Somersetshire
RG9 /  Piece: 1705 / Folio: 40 / Page: 28
Household Schedule 160
Head: Geo. Phipps QUARMAN 42, Nailmaker, b Bristol Bedminster
Wife: Louisa QUARMAN 42, Charwoman, b Gloucester
Dau: Emma QUARMAN 16, unm, Gen Servant, b Bristol Bedminster
Dau: Mary Ann QUARMAN 14, Gen Servant, b Bristol Bedminster
Dau: Rosina QUARMAN 5,  b Bristol Bedminster
/
Household Schedule 161
Head: John JONES 21, Horse Nail Maker, b Bristol Bedminster
Wife: Louisa JONES 20, b Bristol Bedminster
Dau: Sarah Ann JONES 8 months, b Bristol Bedminster
/
Household Schedule 161a
Lodger: William J THOMAS 36, unm, Nail Maker, b Bridgend, Glamorgan
Lodger: John DAVIES 21, unm, Nailmaker, b Old Hill, Stafford

Cheers
