My Great Grandmother, Susan Allan Welsh,Bervie
|
Can anyone help me with the Wemyss family from Bervie. I have John Wemyss, c1822 marrying Susan McRobb,c1827. They have several children, Helen, 1854, (married John Allan) Ann 1857,(Married Barclay Ritchie), William, 1853, Mary 1864, agnes 1862. They were a family of weavers.
John Wemyss father William, c1788, I have married to Jane Christie. I also have him born in Edinburgh. (Although not 100% sure about this). They lived at David Street in Bervie, and the house was 'passed' down the family until it was demolished some years ago. (I remember being in it as a child when my Gt Aunt Nellie lived there with her husband Robert Dorward). What was a 'wolsley weaver'?
Any information would be great. I am trying to peice together where theywent....
Thanks,Lynda

Did you get this from the 1841 census where John is at Fisher Gate with William Wemyss, shown as a "Woolsey weaver"(from FreeCen)?
Could the occupation be an abbreviation of Linsey-wolsey weaver?
http://www.wordnik.com/words/linsey-woolsey
Possibly where the name of the knitwear supplier to HM The Queen came from. http://www.wolsey.com/
Extracted entires from IGI Births of Children to John Wemyss and Susan MacRob/MacRobb/McRobb/McRobert
William 23rd October 1852 Bervie Helen 21st December 1854 Bervie Ann Sutherland 11th January 1857 Bervie Jane MacRob 30th July 1859 bervie Agnes Bruce 17th August 1861 Bervie Mary Adalenia Millar 7th October 1863 Bervie
Susan Wemyss, other name M*cRob* born 1827+/- 2 years Died Bervie 1912 (from SP)
Birth of John Wemyss 21st June 1822, Christening 3rd July 1822 Bervie. Parents William Wemyss and Jane Christie
Marriage of William Wemyss and Jean Christie 10th January 1818 Bervie. I think you may have got the Edinburgh birth for William from the 1851 census.

Thank you for this Kirsty. I am trying to peice togeter what happened to them and where they went. My line is Helen Wemyss, who was the mother of my gt grandmother Susan, on the left. Susan lived all her 81 years in Bervie, and the surrounding farms, with the occasional trip out for a day. I have n memory of any of the Wemyss family., I am going to spend the winter months following this through.
Many thanks , Lynda
