Birth Certificate "Not Present"
« on: Tuesday 03 November 09 04:00 UTC (UK) »

Hi there,

Can anyone please tell me what the reference "not present" on a birth certificate means?

It is on an Australian (Victorian) Birth Cert from 1887, under the "Child - Name and whether present or not" column. I am assuming it means stillborn, but perhaps it doesn't?

Can anyone enlighten me please? Thanks.

Hi Shaezy  Smiley

I believe it refers to whether or not the child was present at the time of registration.

Cheers

How many children are present when their mother (or whoever) registers their birth?  What an odd thing to put on a certificate.  Even if the baby was present, it couldn't confirm or deny anything.

Modified - Sorry that sounds rather abrupt, not meant to be, just making a comment.

Nowadays when you register a birth you take a slip of paper that the hospital or midwife gives you.
Back then I presume they went on say so.

I am presuming that the registrar is covering himself to say " well this lady says she's had a baby, but I haven't seen it"  Grin

Yes, now they bring you all the forms while you're still in hospital and the attending midwife or other medical person signs it before you get it (this is in the ACT).  You have several weeks to actually send the registration form in to the authorities - you don't have to show up in person.

Back "then" I'm guessing you would have had to physically go to the registrar to register the birth sometime after it had happened.  Many of the certs I have (English, Scottish and Australian) don't show the mother being the informant - sometimes it's the father, sometimes another relative.  I'm guessing if dad went to register the birth, he wouldn't be taking the baby with him  Wink Grin so therefore the baby would be "not present".
