James HORNZEE baptism c 1816
« on: Tuesday 03 November 09 08:43 UTC (UK) »

James married Mary Ann Trappitt in Bethnal Green in 1847; his age is shown as 31,occupation , weaver, son of Thomas Hornzee, a cooper. On the 1851 census, he is shown as 35, a general dealer, living with wife and 3 children in Shoreditch. I believe him to be the son of Thomas Hornzee and Mary Ann Tomkins who married on 12/2/ 1809 at St. George/East. There are two children of this marriage born in 1810 and 1812 at St. Leonards Shoreditch which are on IGI. James should have been born c 1815/16 but cannot find him.  He does not feature on later censuses and does not appear to have died (!) but on two of his daughters' marriages in 1880s , he is described as a fishmonger!!  Name later became Hornsey. Any suggestions welcome.

Emma Hornsey married 1872 ( to Henry Tice)                                  Shadwell
both show father James Hornsey as a fishmonger

I checked out the addresses, no luck, can't even find the girls on a census that seems to fit, there are other James ? in Bethnal Green and Hackney areas, I wonder if there is more than your James, strange he isn't on the census as far as I can see
1861 Half Nicol St was empty

Thanks for trying; it is a real puzzle. It is almost as though he wanted to disappear. I wondered whether he was in custody or emigrated but no leads. Not helped by Hornzee becoming Hornsey etc. I have  today got James' father's (Thomas Hornzee) baptism from 1790 at St. Mary Whitechapel via Tower Hamlets archive and his father James Hornzee's marriage in 1775 from the same church. Very ironic that you can get things that old but not more recent stuff.

The marriages I checked didn't show father "dec" so one must assume he was still alive, but incumbents have been known to make mistakes

How about going back to basics and find out addresses when daughters were born, then look ups to nearest census can be done, did he always use the name James, do you think he had a middle name
I would love to crack this one for you TW

1851
James 35 born Stepney
Mary 32 Shadwell
Ellen Shoreditch
Mary Bethnal Green
Emma Shoreditch

Strange thing is no ages  against these 3 girls, so no ages on birth year to check ,

I have done a phonetic search on BMD's under Hornzee,
No trace of Emma
Mary Ann 1845 Poplar
Mary Ann  1850 Whitechapel
Emma Elizabeth 1850 Shoreditch,
the closeness of the 1850 births I think we can dispence with Mary Ann born Whitechapel 1850

I did find bapt of Mary Ann Trappitt of you are interested.

Am I losing the plot here
Maria Ann Hornsey marriage to Goodhart Luke 1885 shows her as age  29, born 1859, therefor she couldn't have been on the 1851 census with James and Mary Ann
Please tell me it is me !!!

PS Emma in 1862 is a minor
