(I believe 1830, but could be between 1825-1831)
I was wondering whether somebody could see if there are any court records of Charles Beckley who was sentenced to transportation to Australia.
I was also wondering whether there would be any way to find out if any of the accused family was in attendance through these records, or any mention of their father etc. I'm looking for confirmation that this is in fact the Charles Beckley that i am looking for.
Thanks in advance! Alana

Hi Alana,
It would be good to explore the Australian Convict Records first if you have not already done so. I note more than one convict with this name
There is a Charles BECKLEY (alias GIDDINGS) tried Wiltshire by special commission. 1830/31 for feloniously destroying a threshing machine - sentence 7 years. - a lot of men appear to have received 7 years transportation for this.
Cheers Kris

I have had a look through the Tasmanian Convict Records and founds some information about this Charles Beckley.
My problem is that i'm not sure that this one is mine. Can i get your opinion on how to decifer this?
I have his death certificate from 1870 - in the column 'Where born, and how long in Australian Colony' it says he was born in Wiltshire England. It the says Van Deimens Land 7 years, Victoria 38 years. <- This entry of Van Deimens land is what makes me think he may be a convict. - in the column 'If married Where and how long' i have him listed as in Geelong and married for 37 years. - His father is listed as George Beckley and his mother Ann
I have his Marriage Certificate which states they were married 11 JAN 1845 in Geelong.
These figures dont add up even though i am sure this is the right person, which makes the rest all the more confusing.
Any suggestions?

Hi Alana,
I have sent you a PM as I may be able to help you with various information for Charles (too much to post here).
Charles was sentenced in 1830 to 7 years transportation for breaking thrashing machines in Enford, Wiltshire. He married Sarah Hamlin in Enford under the name of Charles Giddings on 6 September 1828. He was the illegitimate son of Nancy Beckley and baptised at Enford on 29 June 1804.
Charles had a daughter Angel baptised in Enford on 27 June 1830 (buried at Enford, aged 5 months, on 7 December 1830).
