i am researching from Australia, and am looking for information on the marriage of William John Tomlinson who was born 1829 in Mickleover Derbyshire who married Sarah? born 1830 in Stapenhill Derbyshire. i have information from census records, but cannot find marriage info because i do not know sarah's maiden name. Their children Rebecca and John came to australia in the late 1880s.

Hi Kerry - Welcome to RootsChat  Smiley

In 1861 their oldest child was Annie age 4 and there was a visitor called Thomas Whetton. The registration district for Stapenhill was Burton on Trent.

I like this marriage:

Dec 1852 Burton on Trent 6b 439
William Tomlinson to possibly Sarah Whetton

(the other people on the page are Charlotte Whetton and William Haywood)

To make sure this is the right marriage you'd need one of their children's birth certs to confirm Sarah's maiden name.

I just checked the 1851 census to see if I could find a Sarah Whetton born ca. 1830 Stapenhill - I didn't, but there is one Sarah Whetton born ca. 1830 Cauldwell (same birth place as Thomas Whetton, the man who was visiting in 1861), in service at Twyford and Stenson, Staffordshire.

Genuki is my best friend when it comes to English geography:

CAULDWELL, a hamlet in the parish of Stapenhill

Back in 1841, we have:

HO107/192/10 4 2
Stapenhill, Derbyshire
Cauldwell

John Whetton, 42, Ag lab
Mary, 55
Sarah, 10
Thomas, 8
Rebecca, 5

All born in Derbyshire

many thanks Tati, it is always lovely to have 'another pair of eyes'. i had the census record of thomas whetton visiting, but hadn't put it together with a marriage. this is confirming some info i received with similar news. i think i will be using this wonderful source of information a lot more. thank you for taking the trouble to look this up for me.
