COMPLETED 1825 - Did you have to be of age to witness a marriage?
« on: Tuesday 03 November 09 10:00 UTC (UK) »

Hi

Mary Anne FOWLER and William Charles WILLIMOTT were married (by Licence) St Mary at Lambeth, 3 Sept 1825.
Witnesses: Wiliam FOWLER …followed by in brackets (William FOWLER Jun.), Jane FOWLER, Eliza FOWLER, Sennitt WILLIMOTT.

I'm wondering if you had to be of age to witness a marriage.  I'm trying to find Sennitt WILLIMOTT to see how he might be related to the groom.  In my trawlings, I've found a Sennitt WILLIMOTT but he would be surely too young to act as a witness.

Cheers and thanks

No, apparently you did not have to be of age, but only to be credible.

Hi Little Nell

Thank you very much for your reply.  I've done some further investigation and I've found an Uncle called Sennitt Willimott who would have been aged 66 in 1825.  I'd say it's more than likely he's the man who witnessed the marriage.

Best wishes and many thanks
