In the North Wales Chronicle of 6 October 1883 there is this advertisement:

"To be let, unfurnished Bryn y Don Villas, Garth, Bangor, containing 7 bedrooms, two parlours, Garden &c; also furnished house to be let"

If Lionel was ill, perhaps they moved to Bangor for the sea air.

we can only speculate as to the reason why they moved there but i dont think it was for the sea air, they could get plenty of that at Plymouth and Brighton, usually people relocate for work reasons

Wow, that was clever Shaun to find that piece of information, I would never of expected to see something like that.

It does make sense that they moved with Lionel being ill, he had measles.  What doesn't make sense is that in 1881 WHC and family lived in Plymouth and then in 1891 they lived in Brighton, both by the sea.  Why move to another place by the sea.

Of course, they could of moved anytime within those 10 years, also did mum and older sister Maude move to Bangor as well.  Saying that mum was 7 months pregnant with Gordon at the time of Lionel's death, I have wondered was she with WHC at the time.  I don't know of a way to find this out.

I am just surprised at how near the Isle of Man was to Bangor, and as I have suggested before did WHC venture over there, again there is no way of finding out.  There did seem to be crossings over there at this time.   Just a pity they didn't have passenger lists.

Thank you for the interest.

There wont be passeneger lists as Isle of Man is part of the British Isles.

Maybe he took Lionel there because measles and pregnancy do not mix  Undecided but why then take a 7 bedroom house if not to take the family.

like i said before i dont think he moved there specifcally for the sea air, however saying that i live by the sea and if i was to move i would move to somewhere else by the sea.

Thank you Toni for your comments.

When I first found out that a William Henry Cox was living on the IOM in 1901, my first job was to see about passenger lists and I was told then that it was just a case, as it is today, of getting on a boat and then getting off again!

You are lucky living by the sea, I did so for 6 months many moons ago, and I loved it.

This is just a complete mystery, I find him on the 1901 and think great a breakthrough, and then that gets snuffed out because there is no marriage to be found for him with this 'new woman'.  Then Shaun comes up with the death registration, and I think great another lead, then I find just normal families living at the address given on the death certificate, and I am no further along in untangling this web.

One other thing was that WHC may have been involved in a telephone exchange company in Plymouth, don't think I have mentioned this -

http://www.plymouthdata.info/CYH-Cox%20and%20Williamson.htm

It is all around the same time frame.

Oh well.
All the best

I've been corresponding with the owner of that website.

The telephone Exchange man was a different William Cox.

See the London Gazette September 2 1881 page 4558:

"THIS is to give notice, that the Partnership heretofore

subsisting between Frederick William Pope Cox and

Arthur Healey Williamson, under the firm of Cox and

Williamson, in the business of Electrician Telegraph

Engineers and Contractors, carried on by them at Plymouth,

in the county of Devon, has been this day dissolved

by mutual consent; and that the business will henceforth be

carried on by the said Frederick William Pope Cox alone,

who is authorised to settle all debts due to the firm—As

witness our hands, this 1st day of September, 1881.

F. W. Pope Cox.

A. H. Williamson"

I don't think they married, there was no reason to really.  I found the information about the telephone exchange about 18 months or so ago and contacted Brian Moseley to see if he knew any more than I did.  He was just looking for descendants of this William Henry Cox to confirm he had been involved with the telephone exchange.  Of course, I knew nothing as I was struggling with this WHC, the only definite information I could tell him was that WHC was my great granddad on the 1881 census in Plymouth at Whimple Street and as the telephone exchange was at that address also, then it must be him....................  Brian did mention that it looked like the company did get into trouble and so he moved onto Brighton.

Perhaps this is how it goes, but as you say all we can do is speculate.

My granddad stayed with his mums relatives in Hastings,  mum travelled as a servant to other countries (I presume) and the other child Maude went to live on the Isle of Man the same as her dad.

Well blow me down, that is brilliant detective work Shaun and thank you for contacting the owner of the website.

You are both good to have on board Smiley

So ............ that gets rid of that idea that my man was involved in the telephone exchange, just goes to show that all is not what it seems.
