Glasgow Martyrs
« on: Tuesday 03 November 09 10:27 UTC (UK) »

Peeps,  anything known on the two Franciscan Friars burned alive  near the east end of the Cathedral by Archbishop Dunbar after their trial in 1538? one was a Jerome Russell, who was the other? is there a monument to them? and is that why the nearby Martyrs Church was so called? I believe Dunbar afterwards, tried to blame the Dominicans, who kept the matches, which was why the Mob at the Reformation wreaked particular vengeance on the Blackfriars Monastery and on Dunbar's tomb in the Cathedral, although they spared the structure. Any trial details? ......Skoosh.

Thanks Monica, I've had a wee look round the Cathedral and don't see any monument, there was one in Castle Street which was moved for the motorway, but that was to 4? Covenanters, James Nesbit? & Co, possibly the Martyr's Church was named for them.....Skoosh.

I'm not sure there will be one as catholic emancipation was almost 300 years after the event.

There is to be a painting in memory of John Ogilvie unveiled in the cathedral next year.

The 2nd man was reputed to be Thomas Kennedy of Ayr - some reports put him as young as 18.

has some information.

Thanks Sancti & Falkryn, very interesting site, a wee mistake in calling the Franciscans "Black Friars" though when they were the "Greyfriars" and popular with the people in Glasgow. The "Black Friars were the "Dominicans", both their monasteries were near the High Street. As Glasgow was a Burgh of Regality that explains the power of the archbishops and why John Ogilvie was executed by the Episcopalian Spotiswood. The Martyrs Church was apparently named for James Nesbitt etc' and not Russell & Kennedy. I think there should be a monument to the latter though!  Archbishops seem fairly innocuous nowadays! but power certainly corrupts, even Christians.....Skoosh.
