His MIC states that he went to France in February 1915.  I think that would make him a 2nd battalion man. The 1st were in Gallipoli in March 1915, and although the 2nd initially went to France in August 1914, they took in a few hundred men from the disbanded 8th and 9th Bns in February 1915.

So perhaps jouined up with the 8th/9th Bns then transferred to the 2nd.

As always, its speculative without his service record.

Strangely enough, though, I thought that his number suggested a pre-war regular from around 1906/1907........

Hello,

tend to agree with Stephen - service number appears to be a 1906 one - no 1914 Star, probably recalled from reserve - 8 with colours - 4 in reserve - early/mid 1906 enlistment. Feb 1915 deployment is likely a draft to the 2nd Battalion.

His medal card has a silver war badge entry - if you look up the rolls at Kew you'll get his battalion (at the time of his wounding).

1911 British census has two William Duffy's serving overseas both aged about 28/29.

Dave did you ever chase up his SWB Roll entry it COULD have his Battalion on the info? Also his Medal Roll at Kew should have that info.

Would the rolls show the battalion at the time of being killed?  I know which regiment my g.uncle was in - signed up in 1906, same regiment in 1914 but new army number, but I just wondered if he would have switched regiments between 1914 and 1917.

Yes, I have all the info from CWGC, I was just hoping the medal rolls would give more info than can be seen on screen.  Seems not and as my g.uncle's papers seem to be amongst the ones destroyed during WWII, I doubt I'll be able to find out any more about him than what I already know.

He was in The 19th Royal Hussars (Queen Alexandra's Own) which apparently amalgamated in 1922 to form the 15th/19th Hussars.  Having googled this, it appears that there is a museum in Newcastle devoted to what is now called The Light Dragoons, so I'll try contacting them to see if they have any war diaries, or regimental diaries so I can see where he was betwen 1906 (when he signed on) and 1917 when he was killed.
