Zetland House - where is it?
« on: Tuesday 03 November 09 10:31 UTC (UK) »

I posted this on the old photo recognition site, but it was suggested I try the Aussie site. This is an old family wedding photo, possibly a Darby or Halford family, but not sure.

Thought I had it - have a look at this -

http://vhd.heritage.vic.gov.au/places/heritage/583#

Unfortunately it isn't exactly the house as the steps are too narrow, the columns are not far enough apart and I think on your photo the windows are not flush with the door while on this one the front of the house is straight across (does that make sense??)

I found this one by googling; it is at 16 Yarra St Hawthorn which you can find on Goolgemap.  There is a street view if  you click on the red thingy on the map - must have been taken the same day as the heritage photo as it has the Christmas wreath on the door!  Anyhow, it shows that houses like this could well be in Oz.

Good point Jenn and there is a lot of information about SA Photographers.

70 North Terrace is the former Fowlers Building on the corner of North Terrace and Morphett Street, today houses amongst other tenants, a Multicultural Arts centre.
http://www.nexus.asn.au/

The Fowlers "Lion" Building was erected in 1906 and is a heritage listed building.

It is not opposite The University of Adelaide but the Adelaide railway yards and a skateboard park.  I think the old railway workshops were generally in the same area - probably more to the west Undecided  The main campus of The University of Adelaide is considerably further east along North Terrace as is the University of South Australia - two different institutions.   However the University of SA has a western campus adjacent to the Fowlers Building.

Photos of the Fowlers building in 1966.

Probably too much info but have included responses to some of the information on the linked thread to and I love the history of our old Adelaide buildings. Perhaps your Zetland House could have been at 70 North Terrace pre 1906. Grin

Cheers
Cando

Edit...apologies Judith no red warning notice appeared.  I would have mentioned your post.   Lovely home all the same.  There are four more images if you click on more above the image Grin

No worries, Cando

What has happened to the red warnings - it's a pain when you type something in, post it and find someone else has also put up the info.  Makes threads longer than they need be as well!!
