Hi diverden

Do you think it could be Upton as in Upton on Severn, Worcestershire? It may be that the accent made it sound like Hupton.

The image clearly reads Hupton. Have you checked nearby counties? I know borders have changed over the years, so "Hupton" may be in a neighbouring county today. I've never heard of Hupton though and Wendy's idea seems logical.  Cheesy

Hi
Do you have him in any other census?
I can't find them in 1851 and I'm not sure about 1871/81 - did he remarry to Fanny? There is a Richard Howse born Shipston on Stour.

I was just comparing:

1861
Richard 48
Sarah Ann 48
John 21
James 19
Sarah Ann 15
Jeremiah 13
Francis 11
Mary 10
Richard 7
William 5
Samuel 4

with 1871 Kingswinford
Richard Howse 58 Shipstone Worcs
Fannny ditto ?39
Richard ditto 17
William ditto15

Frances Lewis 15
Samuel Howse 14
Susane Lewis 13
Clara Lewis 7

Marriage Mar qtr 1871 Dudley Richard Howse/Fanny Lewis
Death Jun qtr 1869 Stourbridge (Kingswinford) Sarah Ann Howse aged 57

If you think that fits together then the marriage entry should give you Richard's father's name and occupation which would help in tracking him down. The IGI has a bapt at Shipston on stour in 1812. It still doesn't explain the Hupton in 1861 - it may have been a case of poor writing! I'm not convinced that it is an "H" at the start as it lacks the squiggle at the start of the letter.
