I'm not searching for the family myself- just trying to help you find information.

I think this is the family on 1861 Census.  Aghadowey, I agree with you on the death of Mark CANNON.

The family are listed as CONAN

1861 Census
RG09 / 3037 / 18 / 30
12 Great George Street, Castleton

Mark Conan / head / 41 / Labourer
Ann / wife / 38
Bridget / dau / 15 / Cotton Operative
Margaret / dau / Cotton Operative
Mary A / dau / 6
Sarah / dau / 8 mths /     b. Rochdale
Ann Price / lodger / 19 / Cotton Operative

all other members born Ireland

Wasn't sure if you thouight they were also related to me  Smiley

Going by Free BMD (Cannon, Rochdale) there were very few people with that surname there which is why I wonder if the ones I mentioned might be related. Dee has been able to find them in English census records under various spellings which could make them harder to find in English records.

Lee, if your moving your search back to Ireland, I would search under CANNON first.  I think what has happened in the England Census is that the Enumerator would write down the names as he thinks he heard them.  The Irish families would have very heavy/broad accents - if you know what I mean.

You could have a look on the following website for the families.  You have to register (not a problem if you just want to check records) but to view the actual record it is is EURO 5 - in other words very expensive if your not sure of the family

Could also be listed as Canning in Irish records. To trace the family in Ireland you'll need to see if any church records for that period still exist.

Aghadowey, I agree with you.  It might be helpful for Lee to have a look at Griffiths for County Mayo.

Griffith's website moved- here's new link- but might be too early for this family (and they might not have had any land judging from later census records)-
