My husbands greatx3 grandfather Aaron Harris lived in east peckham and married a lady called Jemima Bridger. I had located a christening in Maidstone which seemed to match but having at last located him in the 1851 census I find he was born in Corston Somerset c 1799 How to I go about getting records from Somerset. my thanks . that sounds just about right. in the 1841 census for east peckham kent his age is given as 60-unfortunately it list him as born in the county which has been steering me in the wrong direction. The 1851 census on ancestry dosn't produce him however a few days ago I found him in Find my past. It was quite specific about his place of birth -aged 72 living in the same place -next door to th pub-incidentally he called his son William. Sally Harris
my thanks I found the other sister -but no one else.nor was the father on the list of harris's christened at All Saints what a pity I hadn't found the census a week earlier. It was the family history fair lastweek in Woking . Sally Harris
my thanks for your help in finding Aaron Harris so quickly. Unfortunately his father William was not listed in the christening records and with no maiden name for the mother I am at a standstill. There seems to have been been a small group of Harris's so I will(for the time being)assume they are related and try to form a link somewhere.
any details I have of Aaron indicate he was a baker. the 1851 census say he is a master baker -this would indicate an apprenticeship. Where can I find apprenticeship records for Somerset. Sally Harris
Sally I presume you have the marriage of William Harris of Queen Charlton to Mary Sims at St John's Keynsham 7th June 1785. Witnesses William Bristow & Richard Harris. Beevee
to beevee my thanks- I didn't have that one though perhaps it is a couple of years too late. I found a hopeful one in Weston just a couple of miles from corston-Its just getting the beyond doubt clue. Sally
