TURNER/ NEWBERRY marriage Axminster
« on: Tuesday 03 November 09 13:54 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find more information to ascertain whether this is the correct marriage but need help as I do not know much about parish/registration districts in Devon.
John Turner married Maria Newberry( Newbury) June quarter 1846 Axminster 10 23.  On the 1861 census  returns I have found both John and Maria are born in Moulton and their children born 1847 and 1849 are also born Moulton. By 1861 they were in London and by 1871 were in Manchester.  John has his occupation as wheewright
Any help would be gratefully received. thanks in anticipation

Hi svb,

I'm having trouble finding the 1851 record you mention.

Isn't the family at HO107/1891 109 19 in 1851, with only one daughter Elizabeth age 1 and Maria age 29 shown as born in Washford Pyne?

Washford Pyne registers in Crediton, Braunton (the birth place showing for Maria in 1861) registers in Barnstaple. In 1851 they were living in South Molton district. We're spoilt for choice  Tongue

So the question is where does the name Newberry come from in the first place - do you have it off a child's birth cert?

Hi Tati and thank you for taking the trouble to try to help.
I have not found this family on the 1851. I will look at the one you mentioned to see if it fits.
I have found what I think is John on the 1871 ( 3972 171 8 ) with his married daughter. Maria and the other children are on 4032 30 54.  I think this is them in 1861 359 148 31 but because of the common name I can not be certain.
I started this family from the 1881 RG 11  3907 57 14 which recorded the one person I was certain was correct. They were in Manchester and gave birthplace as Moulton. There are several additional children by this time.  The one I know is correct is Louisa aged 7 born Manchester. There is a family bible with the children listed but the dates do not tally with the GRO index and I am still in the process of trying to sort them out.
The only marriage of John Turner to a Maria I could find in Devon was the Maria Newberry one from the Familysearch site. I knew it was a stab in the dark but I thought I would try.
If you have any other ideas I will be please to hear from you.

Your 1871/1861 census findings look spot on to me.

William Henry's christening on 20th March 1861 at St Mary Lambeth shows parents John and Maria Ann, and she's also Maria Ann on the 1871 census you found. Searching for a John Turner to Maria Ann marriage in Devon, I only see

Dec 1845 Crediton
John Turner to possibly Maria Ann Challacombe

If it were my family, I'd get hold of one of the children's birth certs to confirm.

Thanks again Tati
I think a birth certificate is in order now especially as you have confirmed the date with the baptism date. Can I be really cheeky and ask if you have easy access to the baptism records for St Marys at Lambeth to check to see if others were christened there.
Dates of birth from the bible are
        Mary Ann Turner 3 11 1858
        Annie Turner 3 5 1863
Enos a name I have never hear before was not recorded in the bible but was 4 years on the 1861 census and 13 on the 1871. Is this a Devonshire name?
