This looks like the 1861
RG9 2630 12 20 Militia Barracks, Chester Thomas 56 Pensioner and Seargeant Major Militia bn Chester Elizabeth 40 bn Flintshire? Whitford? Jane 14 dtr bn America Rebecca 8 dtr bn Glamorgan Merthyr Thomas 6 bn Chester Josephus 3wks bn Chester
Looking at place of birth of eldest then a USA marriage is possible. And they seemed to spend some time on Wales too...

Maybe you could post the query about the marriage on the United States of America board. I don't know if any Rootschatter in America would be able to help, someone did find 2 of my g.gran's brothers for me.
By the way I can't see anything on IGI of an American marriage, but that doesn't mean they weren't married there.
Another option would be to put something on the Armed Services board to see if anyone knows anything about the Militia being in USA that might give you a clue as to where Thomas went to.

Margaret, have you tried the GRO Indexes? It looks as if the marriage would have been about 1846 or a few years earlier. Most (but not all ) marriages took place in the parish of the bride. It might also be worth googling to see what the army was doing in this period. Many long serving men joined the Militia after retirement (as did one of my ancestors). The National Archives holds the service records for army personnel in this period. The records hold the name of the Next of Kin, when they married and in most cases parents as well. They are not on line and you would need to visit. I hope this helps Kathb
