Edward emigrated to Brainerd, MN.  Where would he be likely to enter USA?

Various routes; in the US you have New York but also places like Boston and Baltimore, and he also could have gone to a Canadian port and then crossed the border that way.

How sure are you of the emigration date?
http://castlegarden.org/ shows an Edward Crust, 20, arriving in 1881 on the Hibernian.

Thanks, thats interesting.  I know he was in England in April 1881 for the census, and that he was in Brainerd by 1883, so the Hibernian record might be him.  Age is probably right, he was 7 months old on the 1861 census, which gives a birth in September 1860.

Many thanks again.

On the Baltimore Passenger list of the Hibernian on 3 Aug 1881 there is another passenger traveling with Edward Crust by the name of Horace Pentecost.  He is 7 years older but they both appear to be traveling to Marshall, Texas together.

When I checked the 1881 UK Census I found a Horace Pentecost of the correct age living in Ashford, Kent which is about 4 miles from Mersham where Edward was at that time.

Maybe that helps confirm whether this is the correct immigration record for Edward Crust.

Okay...here is another bit of information.  The 1900 US Census has both Edward Crust and Horace Pentecost (who is living in Dunkirk, Chautauqua, New York by this time) as BLACKSMITH's.  In the late 1880's the Texas and Pacific Railway was being laid from Marshall, Texas to Sierra Blanca, Texas.  Maybe they both worked for the railroad.

The 1910 Brainerd Minnesota Census record shows Edward's immigration year as 1881 and it says he is a foreman and works for the railroad.  And when I checked Horace Pentecost in 1910 New York he also is a foreman working on locomotives.  So it seems they did work for the railroad.

Thanks for all you have found.  Looks (almost) certain that it is the right Edward CRUST.  According to the 1881 UK census Edward worked as a Labourer on the railway.  Seems like he did OK for himself.

I have just been contacted by someone who I think is Edward's grandson (Don CRUST, still living in Brainerd).

May I ask which site(s) you use for US censuses?  Also which site you use for US immigration (I have been using castlegarden.org)?

Best wishes
