Bridge of Weir burial/cremation 1952
« on: Tuesday 03 November 09 17:35 UTC (UK) »

Hi All,

My first post here - hope someone can help. I have a relative who died at the Lintwhite Hostel, Bridge of Weir in 1952. I'm trying to find where he was buried or cremated.

I've tried both Renfrewshire Council and Woodside Cemetery & Crematorium (owned by the Paisley Cemetery Company) but neither organisation could find him in their records. I even tried Inverclyde Council without success.

Can anyone think of anywhere else I could try? Are there any churchyards whose records are NOT kept by the institutions mentioned above? And if so, where might they be found?

My relative was English, but I don't think he left a will specifying where he wanted to be buried, and I don't believe he had any relatives to organise the funeral, so I would have thought he was buried in or around Bridge of Weir. But perhaps there was some effort made to repatriate people in these cases - does anyone know?

Any advice would be much appreciated. I feel terrible that no-one in the family knows where this poor man was buried, so I would be very grateful for any help.

Kilbarchan Cemetary is the nearest to BoW. The next nearest in Renfrewshire are Elderslie. Hawkhead in Paisley or Arkleston in Paisley.

Hi

If he was cremated has to be Woodside as it's the only one. Burials around then would have been Woodside, Hawkhead or possibly Arkleston or Elderslie (Abbey Road).

You've tried both places I would have suggested and hope you have recovered from how much they charge for the info!

It is possible he was buried/cremated outside the area. All the cems for Renfrewshire are handled by the local council except for Woodside which is a private company.

Another possible place to try is the funeral directors - they may just still have records. Not sure who would have done this for Bridge of Weir cos it's only a wee place. The usual ones for Paisley area are the Co-Op or Goudies.

Many thanks, Ann and davieboy. I'll try the funeral directors you suggested, and keep my fingers crossed!

If anyone else has any other suggestions, please do let me know.

Thanks once again.
