WEMYSS FAMILY BERVIE « on: Today at 00:08:32 »
~~~~~~~~ Can anyone help me with the Wemyss family from Bervie. I have John Wemyss, c1822 marrying Susan McRobb,c1827. They have several children, Helen, 1854, (married John Allan) Ann 1857,(Married Barclay Ritchie), William, 1853, Mary 1864, agnes 1862. They were a family of weavers.
John Wemyss father William, c1788, I have married to Jane Christie. I also have him born in Edinburgh. (Although not 100% sure about this). They lived at David Street in Bervie, and the house was 'passed' down the family until it was demolished some years ago. (I remember being in it as a child when my Gt Aunt Nellie lived there with her husband Robert Dorward). What was a 'wolsley weaver'?
Any information would be great. I am trying to peice together where theywent....
Thanks,Lynda
Hi Lynda
Could it be a 'linsey-woolsey' weaver?
Linsey-woolsey (less often, woolsey-linsey or in Scottish English, wincey) is a coarse twill or plain-woven fabric woven with a linen warp and a woollen weft. Similar fabrics woven with a cotton warp and woollen weft in Colonial America were also called linsey-woolsey or wincey.[1][2] The name derives form a combination of linen and woollen.
Helpful that in 1881, two up the daughters show as Mrs and their husbands' names
This is a possible for son William in 1881:
William Wemyss 28, gen lab. b. Bervie Margret Wemyss 26, wife b. Carnbee, Fifeshire
Address: 18 High Street, Bervie
I can't see him in the later censuses though
Daughter Agnes is in Old Marchar, Aberdeenshire for 1881 working at the Paterson household as a domestic servant. I think she may have married a John Reid (marriage for this couple in 1882 in Bervie).
This looks like this couple in 1891:
John Reid 27, Labourer in Steel Work, b. Elgin Agnes Reid 29 b. Bervie Alexander Reid 7 b. Bervie William Reid 5 b. Bervie Maggie E Reid 2 Gourdon, Kincardineshire John Reid 10 Months b. Gourdon, Kincardineshire William Ritchie 14, engine cleaner, boarder b. Gourdon, Kincardineshire...I wonder if this is the William Ritchie who shows aged 4 in 1881, son of Ann?
Address: 6 Parkhead St, Motherwell
Possible for 1901:
John Reid 37, steel smelter b. Elgin Agnes Reid 39 b. Bervie Alexander Reid 17 b. Bervie William Reid 15 b. Bervie Maggie Reid 12 b. Bervie John Reid 10 b. Bervie Allan Reid 9 b. Motherwell Lanarkshire Duncan Reid 3 b. Motherwell Lanarkshire Aggie Reid 1 b. Motherwell Lanarkshire
Address: Millar Place, Dalziel, Lanarkshire
My Great Grandmother, Susan Allan Welsh,Bervie
|
Hi Monica,
Thanks for this info, it is great. My famiy seem to be a bit of a mystery. I m the 2 x gt grandauhter of Helen Wemys and John Allan. The picture on the left is their only child Susan. She lived in Bervie all her days and seems to have been a bit o a lass as we would say. She had a son called John Allan beforeshe married my gt grandfather Alex. I have never had any contact with the Wemyss family and they seem to have diappeared from Bervie altogether. There does not seem to be any cntact on any of the nes still alve in Bervie/Gourdon. I am going to do a bit f work on this during te winter months. Helen husband seems to have died around 1881 after Susan was born, although I think I may have him on the ship 'Diana' in 1881.
Onc again, Thankyou. I am about to start my night shift....yuk....much rather do this...
Take care, Lynda
