Another bigamy question
« on: Tuesday 03 November 09 20:09 UTC (UK) »

Huh I'm hoping that there'll be a Rootschatter out there who knows a little about bigamy laws. I have a definite case of bigamy but am failing miserably to find anything about the court case. I know the husband went to prison, but don't know for how long.  I've estalished that he died in 1965, so his prison sentence must have been over by then. what I'm wondering,is if anyone knows low long a typical sentence for bigamy might be, please?
I'm going boss-eyed looking at the microfiche at the library, and trying to work out at what date it might be safe to stop hunting through!
edited to add a post script - in a related query, does anyone know where I might be able to access archives for Brighton's local papers, please.  Many thanks for reading  Wink

I've had a quick look around. Sentences for bigamy have been extremely variable over the last couple of centuries (possibly the worst being transportation for seven years !!!). It appears from what I can see that the maximum sentence for most of the 20th century has been 15 years, but this has rarely, if ever, been applied. Three to five years seems to be average - minus time off for good behaviour etc.

Mike, thanks so much for the speedy reply - much appreciated.  Kiss  It sounds like if my man died in 1965, the case could have been as late as 1962.  A real help, thanks
