I have just joined the Forum and hope that somebody can help me. I am trying to find out where my father served during WW 1.
My father never really told us a lot about his service but I understand that he went France ( I think ) when he was about 15/16 years of age, as many did. He was initially with the 6th Liverpool Rifles and joined at Warwick Street Barracks, Liverpool. Some time during his service he joined the Royal Horse Artillery.
His regimental No: was - 686249. I know that he was awarded the 14/15 Star.
I am afraid that is as much as I know.

Hi Gren
Welcome to Rootschat.
Usingthat regimental number I also get an Arthur Hughes who was in the Royal Field Artillery as a Territorial soldier but he didn't qualify for the 14/15 Star according too his medail index card.
The photo certainly points towards an RA man so a bit more information on your father would certainly help.

Gosh, that was quick. Yes, he was Arthur Hughes and he was born in Liverpool. I do have his original 14/15 Star with his number etc on it. I think his year of birth was 1898, or there about, but I can check that if need be. It would be really nice to find our what areas he served in.
He was also in the army during WW2 but I think he would have been too old to go abroad. His army No: then was 2050351. Don't know if this helps.
Thanks,

If he served in WW2 his army record will still be with MOD you can apply for a copy by going on the Veterans Agency website. If he joined under age he may have been found out and sent home then rejoined the artillery???

Hi Gren
Unfortunately it seems his WW1 papers didn't survive the Blitz when most of them were destroyed. His medal card refers to 115 B (withthe B in superscript) and though I'm no expert on the RA, it might be the 115th Brigade who were part of the 26th Division. Their locations can be found here http://www.1914-1918.net/26div.htm
As Ady says, his WW2 papers can be obtained from here http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html

Gren,
686249 is a Territorial (post 1917 re-numbering) and in the batch allotted to 1/3 and 2/3 West Lancs Brigades (277 and 287 Brigades) RFA.

I have now confirmed that Dad was born 1897, which would suggest he did not join under age do you think. I have just found in some other papers a Memorandum bearing the stamp of the "Territorial Force Records Office, Preston" dated April 1916. This appears to be returning something and has hand written on it ( 2323 Hughes A 3/3 West Lancs Brd??? R F A. Would this information be enough for somebody to tell me where he served ?
Another interesting thing is that his WW2 Pay Book shows in "Particulars of Former Service" his former Army No: as 686429. I dont know why this would be.

3/3 West Lancs Brigade would be the home based reserve. He would then have gone overseas with 1/3 or 2/3 as my post above. 2323 would have been his service number pre-1917 re-numbering. He did not go overseas prior to early 1917.
1/3 (277) Bde were in 55th (West Lancs) Division. http://www.1914-1918.net/55div.htm
2/3 (287) Bde were in 57th (2nd West Lancs) Division. http://www.1914-1918.net/57div.htm
The 3rd West Lancs Bde were based at 65 Admiral Street, Liverpool, with the exception of one battery being at Widnes.
