James M Hill c1868 Woolwich, Kent, England. Thomas Hill (Father), Mary-Sarah Palmer (Mother)
Would like to know if birth certificate gives father's occupation as a soldier and which regiment etc.
NB. Information supplied from 1881 Census in Edinburgh.
99% of my relatives are Scottish  so I have not yet accessed the English records so far.

However
1871 census shows at castle Dover
Dover kent
(seem to be listed soldier's -then wives -then children - there are 37 pages
but there is this
Thomas Hill Married 35 Sergeant R A b Scotland

Mary Sarah Hill Married 32 Soldier's wife Spain british sbject
RG10 1008 107 page 28
then on page 32
jessie Hill 9 b Devonport Devon

It wood appear that from your info' that he was a Sergeant in the Royal Artillery. 
I also didn't know of the three older children.

There is nothing to link the children to parents - it's just they were the children named Hill all rntered together on same page
I'll have a look to see if I can find them later

The two youngest children are given on my 1881 census and with magdelena being such an unusual christian name + two year gap to elder brother James it confirms that these are definitely their children.
