An ancestor's profession on 1871 census.

I googled but couldn't find a explanation, anyone got any ideas?

Hi Parmesan

Hmmm......I can only think the word you see a 'Raper' might be a diminutive form of the word "Representative" Huh

Can you let us know the ref. for the Census so we can look at it?

Cheers

The '81 seems to say "office keeper" and I think the '71 probably says "bank keeper" but I don't know what it means!

I imagine it would be similar to a caretaker's post in a school/concierge, with responsibility for keeping the premises secure and in good order, overseeing the cleaners etc etc
