1891/01 look up please
« on: Tuesday 03 November 09 22:06 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find out what happened to the following chappie

Thomas Goodwin born 1851 in Meopham, Kent.  He is the son of Thomas and Martha Goodwin.

On the 1881 he is a lodger in the house of a Marther(!) Munn.  He is aged 30 and unmarried and there are too many marriages after 1881 for me to be sure of getting the right one - if any.

I have done a search on the 1911 but can't see him.

There is a likely death on freebmd for 1901 but just not sure.

Any help would be appreciated.  Many thanks. R. Smiley

Thank you very much for that.  I had just gone off to check that marriage too!  This helps me to fill in another little twiglet on the tree.  Very grateful.  R.

Thanks but wouldn't that make his birth 1847?  I'd wondered about the 1901 death but now that I have a wife for him, I'll go and have a route around in the 1911!  Thanks again. R.

Hi again.  Thanks for that marriage.  The Goodwin tree is large and complicated and goes back to c1720. I have a lot of info on it but I am just catching up on some later ones who have escaped my attention. I thought I would smooth out some creases!

Very grateful for the interest.  R.

Dont rely to much on Census ages they can vary by anything up to 10 years or more over the life span across the censii. I dont think you will find him in 1911 if that is him died !903 I posted.
I haven't found him or Maria on the 1901 yet.

Hi again. The age of Thomas is correct as I have seen the baptism on Medway City Ark - isn't that a brilliant site?  I have been able to veryify most dates of the family through that source.  This is why I wondered about whether his death was the 1901 entry.  I was just checking the 1911 to make sure he didn't appear there - covering my back so to speak!

I am wondering if Maria died too and that is why they cannot be found in the 1901- there is an entry for 1896 - Maria Goodwin aged 37 Dartford on freebmd.  The age would be about right. What do you think?

Will try and spend more time on this later today- I am very grateful for your input so far as I was up the proverbial gum tree with him and it was difficult to sort through all the Thomas Goodwins.  Wish they had had more imagination in name that family - they're all called William or Thomas-the only exception was Valentine who was a dream to research!!

It looks very likely tht you have found the death for maria

I can't find any of the children in 1901 - except Charles lee - so that is a puzzle???

Thanks to your posting of the 1891 census, and the pointer to Crockenhill, I have found young Thomas's baptism there!!   (courtesy of MCA of course)  Grin Grin Grin

He was baptised Thomas Henry so later today I am going to look at freebmd because I am sure there were some entries for these initials in the births and marriages!  Will also check for a marriage and other children.     Will report back!  Regards. R.

Hi R,
If the1901 death you refer to is theThanet  one ,thats not your Thomas as he is shown in Thanet with his family earlier in census .
I still think the 1903 Dartford death is your man and the Maria death 1896 is his wife.

Dont forget the person is dead and cant confirm info given ,regarding their age, is correct.
If you obtain the Death Cert (it only costs £7.00 from GRO if you quote the full ref) you might find one of the deceased's children registered it if its you Thomas.  Or a neighbour which you could then crosscheck on addresses.

We probably cant find the kids in 1901 because they had been farmed out following mums death. Where Thomas was is still a mystery he may well be on the cessus somewhere very badly transcribed.
